Small Huddle Rooms (SH) and Medium Huddle Rooms (MH) support small and medium groups working together, near or adjacent to classrooms, with more privacy and less disruption. Acoustic separation encourages communication and collaboration to occur. Designed primarily for student collaboration, workshops, breakout, special education and itinerant services, the flexible space can be outfitted to support parent and IEP meetings, professional development, and teacher planning. Huddle Rooms are available during, between, or after classes. Ownership is shared.
The Ed Specs serve to illustrate concepts that will inform the master plans based on OUSD's aspirations to the audience of future architects who will implement them as well as for OUSD stakeholders to understand the reasoning behind modernizations.
Easy Access
Proximity and visibility from studios and shared learning spaces supports easy access and passive supervision. Distribute Huddle Rooms to accommodate quick movement to these spaces from all learning studios, minimize disruption and encourage frequent use.
Student Choice
Provide a variety of furniture options in different Huddle Rooms to support students in choosing their preferred arrangement for that particular activity. Functions should vary based on the configuration of the small learning communities and student support requirements.

Furniture
Flip-top, mobile and nesting tables, and a variety of seating will allow maximum flexibility. Soft, comfortable furniture, bean bags, and high-top tables and chairs provide variety in body posture.
Affordances
Provide writable surfaces and digital display to support problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical-thinking.

Future Flexibility
To support future adaptability of space, provide a lockable door, power, data, and voice drops to accommodate future use as office space. Placing two smaller Huddle Rooms together allows future expansion into a larger space.
